GENERAL INFORMATION
The Institute of Genetics and Animal Breeding of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IGAB PAS; in Polish " Instytut Genetyki i Hodowli Zwierząt Polskiej Akademii Nauk, IGHZ PAN") originates from the Department of Experimental Animal Breeding, which was created by the Polish Academy of Sciences in 1955.
IGAB PAS is a part of the Division Two: Biological and Agricultural Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
The Scientific Council of the Institute has the right to confer the degree of Doctor (PhD) and Habilited Doctor (DSc) of Agricultural Sciences. Since 1994 the Institute runs postgraduate studies. The Institute publishes scientific journal “Animal Science Papers and Reports” – an English language quarterly indexed in the Journal Citation Reports/Science Edition of Thomson Reuters.
The staff of the Institute numbers 140 persons, including 50 researchers and 23 PhD students. The Institute has six scientific departments: Department of Molecular Biology, Department of Experimental Embryology, Department of Animal Improvement, Department of Genomics and Biodiversity and Department of Animal Behaviour. Besides, the Institute owns an Experimental Farm keeping various farm and laboratory animals (cattle, horses, sheep, goats, rabbits, quails and mice). Such a unique scientific infrastructure enables to undertake modern and diverse research topics.
The principal fields of the basic research of IGAB PAS include: molecular genetics, experimental embryology, animal biotechnology, and the genetic basis of stress physiology and animal ethology. Moreover, applied research is conducted in the fields of population genetics, animal breeding, as well as animal maintenance and production systems. Studies on animal behaviour and welfare are an important complement. The principal purpose of applied research is the elaboration of such methods of animal improvement and sustainable production systems which aim at obtaining safe and functional food, ensuring a high level of animal welfare and limiting the unfarourable effect of agriculture on the natural environment.
The Institute is a member of: the Polish Technology Platform for Food cooperating with the European Technology Platform “Food for Life”; the European Technology Platform for Farm Animal Breeding and Reproduction (FABRE) and the European Association of Research Managers and Administrators (EARMA). The representatives of the Institute are also members of the Polish National Council of EU Research Projects’ Coordinators (KRAB) and COST programme.
